Talking to an AI is a skill, and it's called prompting. The good news? It's less like coding and more like giving clear instructions to a helpful new teammate. Get the instructions right and the AI's answers get dramatically better.

What a "prompt" is

A prompt is simply what you type to the AI. "Write me an email" is a prompt. So is a detailed, three-paragraph brief. The clearer your prompt, the better your result โ€” the same way a clearer request to a colleague gets you better work.

The 4-part recipe for great prompts

Remember four ingredients: Role, Task, Context, Format.

  • Role โ€” tell the AI who to be: "You are a friendly career coach."
  • Task โ€” say exactly what you want: "Rewrite my resume summary."
  • Context โ€” give the background it needs: "I'm switching from teaching to data analytics."
  • Format โ€” describe the shape of the answer: "In 3 short bullet points, simple words."

Put together:

You are a friendly career coach.
Rewrite my resume summary.
I'm a teacher switching into data analytics with no tech experience.
Give me 3 short bullet points in simple, confident language.

That prompt will beat "fix my resume" every single time.

Weak prompt: "Tell me about SQL." Strong prompt: "Explain SQL to a total beginner in under 100 words, using one everyday example." Same AI โ€” very different answer.

Simple tricks that instantly help

  • Be specific about length: "in 5 bullets," "in one paragraph," "under 50 words."
  • Ask for the audience: "explain like I'm 10," "for a busy manager."
  • Give an example of what good looks like, and the AI will copy the style.
  • Ask it to think step by step for tricky problems โ€” it reasons more carefully.
  • Iterate: if the first answer isn't right, say what to change. Conversation beats one-shot.

Fix answers you don't like

Don't start over โ€” steer. Try replies like:

  • "Make it shorter and friendlier."
  • "That's too formal, sound more human."
  • "Add a real-world example."

Each nudge gets you closer, just like editing a first draft.

๐Ÿ’ก

Keep a personal "prompt notebook." When a prompt works brilliantly, save it. Soon you'll have a toolkit you can reuse for emails, summaries, learning, and planning.

Why this is a career skill, not a gimmick

Every profession is starting to use AI. The people who get promoted won't be the ones who avoid it โ€” they'll be the ones who direct it well. Good prompting turns a one-hour task into a ten-minute one. Learn it now, while it's still an edge.
